Metallography

Metallography Laboratory

Due to the ever-increasing national demand for metal testing laboratories and in order to provide scientific, research and consultancy services in the fields of metallic materials selection, methods of production, physica l and mechanical properties determination, optimization and reverse engineering of parts and components, Metallography laboratory with over 38 years of experience and skilled experts is ready to offer its services to the domestic industries. In Razi Metallurgical Research Center, Structural analysis is based on microstructural images, obtained from conditioned surfaces of various parts. These components have nonferrous and ferrous basis with wide range of applications in automotive, aerospace components, medical industry, ceramic parts and welded articles. Structural analysis may help engineers predict the strength, toughness, hardness, high temperature corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance. Moreover, it would help engineers and experts to avoid premature failure and corrosion in industries, particularly when limitations in number or dimensions of a part, or difficulty of sampling for destructive tests, makes it impossible to perform mechanical experiments. Furthermore, evaluating corroded surfaces and failure levels would guide experts towards identifying methods to prevent corrosion or failure. Microscopic studies via optical and stereo microscopes are performed in a broad magnification spectrum (25x to 1000x) and the analysis is carried out by "Image Analyzer" software. The Image Analyzer software is capable of calculating phase ratio, grain size, determining coating thickness, size and dispersion of graphite in cast iron, steel cleanliness and the percentage of impurities. Through structural analysis, it is possible to determine manufacturing process and the applied heat treatment cycle to reverse engineer parts. In addition to metallographic tests, hardness experiments are conducted in this laboratory, too. Hardness test is a fast method of characterizing mechanical properties in parts, due to it not needing time consuming specimen preparation procedures and its rapid experiment process. Additionally, the hardness number can be used to specify and control the macrostructure and microstructure of parts and the heat treatment cycle, to which the specimen was exposed. This method of testing can be done in a non-destructive manner. Due to its variety, scales and applied forces, depending on the type of alloy, dimensions and physical and mechanical properties, Hardness test may be performed on a broad range of metals.
